In a recent meeting, Denton County commissioners approved an application to allow the purchase of surplus military equipment for local law enforcement.
The measure was approved despite the criticism of the surplus program across the nation accompanying protests of alleged police brutality.
The meeting was restricted and only commissioners, county staff, and the media were authorized to be present. The commissioners have not disclosed when the public will be allowed to attend the meetings in person. However, the public is able to participate in meetings remotely.
The commissioners also mentioned that the county has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases over the past month.
Matt Richardson, director of Denton County Public Health, commented on the recent virus reports.
“We do seem to be seeing a spike in cases that parallels with other communities in the Metroplex and in Texas, [and] we know that cases are growing,” Richardson told the Denton Record-Chronicle. “The last week we have seen a notable increase in the number of cases and the positivity rate, which went from 2.1% to 7.8% — which is a concern.”
