Denton County Commissioners Court has authorized a close to $5 million effort to help fill the gap on food needs across the county amid the COVID-19 crisis.
“Feeding our Denton County families during this pandemic has been of utmost importance,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell said. “We meet each week with food pantry officials across the county to discuss the availability of food and the increasing demand.”
The funds are coming from the CARES Act through the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Additionally, Denton County has presented grants to food pantries that have double refrigeration capacity. The county has also bought some refrigerated trucks in an effort to enable non-profits to store food longer.
“We are doing everything we can in Denton County but we cannot do it alone,” Mitchell said. “It will take everyone pitching in to keep people fed in Denton County during this ongoing pandemic.”
