Allen City Council met on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Read on for the highlights and approved projects.

The full agenda and meeting video are available here.

Don Rodenbaugh name change approved

After more than 20 years of operations, Allen Parks and Recreation’s most-visited recreation facility will get a name change. Following approval by Allen City Council, Don Rodenbaugh Natatorium will officially change its name to Don Rodenbaugh Aquatics Center.

The name better describes the services offered and is more commonly used when people search for a place to swim.

This change will roll out over the next few months, beginning with immediate changes to the facility’s website and other online accounts, and later in building signs and printed materials.

Allen Dog Park receives official name

The site of Allen’s future dog park has been named “The Bark Yard.”

Originally named “Jupiter Park,” this site was chosen to be the location of the future dog park in 2022. As design of the park nears its conclusion, construction of The Bark Yard is set to begin Spring 2023.

You can keep up with the latest information by joining Allen Dog Park Project Updates, a private Facebook group managed by City staff.

2023 street and alley rehabilitation approved

To keep up with aging and deteriorating streets and alleys, City Council has approved the 2023 Street and Alley Rehabilitation Project for $1,994,991.

During this annual project, the City will remove and replace concrete panels on approximately 3,000 yards of alleys and 12,300 yards of roads in various locations throughout Allen including portions of Stacy Road, Bethany Drive, Rivercrest Boulevard and more.

Allen City Television to receive new video production studio

Construction of a new modern video production studio has been approved.

Located in the Municipal Court and Parks & Recreation building, this new studio will include a dedicated studio space along with proper broadcast, control, and editing bays.

The existing studio space in City Hall was originally built in 2000 and has no sound insulation and relies on obsolete technology. The current space also does not meet any modern design requirements and its small size makes it difficult to film more than two people.

The current studio will be turned into a broadcast center with a server room and sound-insulated editing bays.

ACTV provides live video coverage of City Council and Planning & Zoning Commission Meetings, promotes community services and events, and broadcasts cultural programming featured at Allen Public Library. The channel has earned numerous state and national awards, including the National Association of Telecommunications Officers & Advisors Award of Excellence and multiple Lone Star Emmy Awards.

Council approves street sweeping contract

As part of the City of Allen’s commitment to clean public spaces, a new annual contract was approved for street sweeping services. Street sweeping is performed on a regular basis on major roadways, signalized intersections on major roads, residential collector streets and City facility parking lots.
