Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement after voting in support of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
"We are the people's representatives in the people's House. It's up to us to take action to rein in this administration's reckless government spending," said Burgess. "That is what House Republicans did with the Limit, Save, Grow Act and have done once again with the Fiscal Responsibility Act. Since the beginning of this year, President Biden and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre adamantly insisted that there would be no negotiations on increasing the debt ceiling. Thankfully, Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans stood our ground and forced the President to the negotiation table.
"While I wish there was more direct language for energy permitting to help grow the economy, this legislation does take steps to uphold our commitment to the American taxpayer. If Congress does not do its job to pass the appropriations bills by September 30 and instead passes a Continuing Resolution, there is an automatic 1% cut across the board. Additionally, this legislation starts to claw back unspent COVID dollars, and the billions appropriated to the IRS. Our work is not done; however, we are headed in the right direction and holding this administration accountable."
