Yesterday, Congressman Michael C. Burgess was honored with a portrait unveiling in the U.S. Capitol, recognizing his 22-year tenure in Congress and service to Texas's 26th Congressional District. The House Rules Committee hosted the event.
Chairman Burgess' portrait, painted by James Tennison, was revealed by his wife, Laura Burgess. Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Chairman Tom Cole, Chairman Jodey Arrington, and Ranking Member Jim McGovern spoke at the ceremony. The portrait will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rules Committee hearing room.
“I am beyond grateful and honored for the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as the Representative of the 26th Congressional district for the past 22 years,” said Chairman Burgess. He expressed gratitude for those who supported him and highlighted his efforts to ensure Texas had necessary resources and promote energy independence. He emphasized his dedication to policies affecting everyday Americans.
Speaker Mike Johnson praised Dr. Burgess' commitment to reforming healthcare and leadership during challenging times: “For more than 20 years, Dr. Michael Burgess has been a faithful servant to the people of North Texas... There’s a Texas-sized hole in Congress tonight.”
Majority Leader Steve Scalise commended Rep. Burgess' focus on transparency and accountability: “After more than two decades of dedicated service... it is an honor to celebrate the legacy of a strong conservative leader."
House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington lauded Dr. Burgess’ competence: “There’s not a smarter, more competent, and more committed member of Congress than Dr. Burgess.”
Congressman Cole reflected on their close working relationship: "As Chairman... there was no better person than Dr. Burgess to take over as Chair."
Ranking Member Jim McGovern acknowledged their bipartisan efforts despite political differences: “While Congressman Burgess and I often find ourselves on opposite sides... His voice will be missed in Congress.”
Dr. Michael C. Burgess has served since 2003 after practicing medicine for nearly three decades in North Texas. He joined the Rules Committee in 2013 and became its chairman in 2024 while also chairing other committees related to health care.
