Today, Congressman Michael C. Burgess announced the donation of his congressional archive to the University of North Texas (UNT) Special Collections. The archive, spanning 22 years of his career in Congress, will be available for research and public access.
Burgess, a UNT alumnus representing Texas's 26th Congressional District since 2003, is retiring from Congress. His donation aims to benefit researchers and constituents by providing insights into legislative processes and decisions made during his tenure.
“It has been the honor of my lifetime to represent the 26th District of Texas for the past 22 years," said Congressman Burgess. He expressed gratitude for sharing these experiences with UNT faculty and students who will display copies from his time in Washington, D.C.
Morgan Gieringer, head of Special Collections at UNT, commented on the significance of preserving congressional records: “As a retiring member of Congress, Dr. Burgess has taken an important step to ensure that the records of his congressional service will be preserved and made accessible to the public."
Congressional archives typically contain documents like speeches, correspondence, legislative files, photographs, and recordings from public events. They are valuable resources for educational purposes and understanding governmental operations.
The UNT Special Collections department plans to digitize Burgess’s archive fully before making it publicly accessible through the Portal to Texas History.
UNT is recognized as a leading research institution with over 46,000 students enrolled in various degree programs. It is designated as both a Minority-Serving Institution and Hispanic-Serving Institution.
