University Rehabilitation Center held the position of the second largest nursing home in Denton County during the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility had a total of 146 available beds, which is 37 more than the Denton County average for this period. During these three months, an average of 109.5 residents received care at the center.

CMS assigned University Rehabilitation Center an overall rating of 1 out of 5, which is below Texas’s nursing home average of 2.7.

The largest facility in the county during the quarter was Brookhaven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, offering 180 beds, followed by Corinth Rehabilitation Suites on the Parkway with 134 beds, ranking third.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, University Rehabilitation Center had incurred $40,446 across two fines and received two penalties.

There were 15 for-profit nursing homes operating in Denton County, Texas.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s older adult population continues to rise as younger groups decrease. Americans aged 65 and older grew by 13% from 2020 to 2024, while the under-18 population dropped 1.7%. The older adult population has expanded notably over the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

About half of these older adults—roughly 28 million—are estimated to need long-term services and support at some point, according to a 2021 study. The same study forecasts that over one third could eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
