SOS FOR PIPES, WATER LEAKS

SOS FOR PIPES, WATER LEAKS | City of Richardson

In light of this weekend’s cold temperatures, the City and the American Red Cross have some tips to help prevent frozen pipes and guidance on what to do if they do freeze:

  • Leave a small trickle of both hot and cold water coming out of faucets attached to pipes most vulnerable to freezing (those located in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls).
  • Open sink cabinet doors to allow heat from the home’s heating system to circulate around the pipes.
  • If you plan to be out of town, set the thermostat to at least 55 degrees.
  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Know how to turn off your water/meter if you suffer a leak, to minimize property damage. Click here for information on how to turn it off yourself; if you are unable to turn it off, call the City’s 24-hour Response Line at 972-744-4111 and someone will be dispatched to turn off the meter.
