Washington, D.C. - In a statement released today, Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee and Chairman for the House Budget Committee Health Task Force, expressed his concerns over the recent government funding lapse and the priorities of the current administration.
"A lapse in appropriations for funding the government should be the absolute last resort," said Congressman Burgess. "Unfortunately, what America has witnessed not just this week but since January 2022, is an administration that chooses to ignore half of Congress. While President Biden and Senate Democrats care more about securing the Ukraine border, House Republicans are also concerned about ensuring that our Southern border is secure. This Administration has turned every city in this country into a border town. It is critical that we prioritize our homeland first."
Congressman Burgess's remarks come after voting against H.R. 5860 - Continuing Appropriations Act, 2024 and Other Extensions Act. His opposition to the bill reflects his strong belief that a lapse in government funding should only occur as a last resort.
The Congressman's concerns extend beyond the government funding issue. He criticizes the current administration for its priorities, suggesting that they prioritize securing the Ukraine border over addressing the security concerns at the Southern border of the United States. Burgess emphasizes the need to prioritize the homeland and secure the Southern border, stating that the current administration has turned every city in the country into a border town.
As Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee and Chairman for the House Budget Committee Health Task Force, Congressman Burgess holds influential positions in Congress. His statement reflects the growing frustration among House Republicans regarding the current administration's handling of various issues, including government funding and border security.
