Wise County is the recipient of a Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program Round XI grant.
The Wise County Courthouse was constructed in 1896 of pink granite with sandstone details. Grant funds will be used to produce construction documents for a full restoration of this property. According to the Texas Historical Commission, work will include removal of an elevator installed in the primary atrium space; masonry repairs; and the restoration of interior finishes such as encaustic tile floors, ornamental plaster, and wood wainscots and trim.
Texas has more historic courthouses than any other state with more than 240 standing that are at least 50 years old. The Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program repairs and restores the state's most treasured historic landmarks.
There are several benefits that follow the restoration of a historic courthouse. They have proven to be economic boosters for the state of Texas and the local counties. Counties also see improvements in safety, accessibility, energy efficiency and tourism.
Courthouse preservation projects have produced nearly 11,000 jobs for Texans.
